About this book
Jael Mbogo is a Kenyan politician, women's rights campaigner and social worker whose public career began under colonial rule and continued into the multi-party era: the first female shorthand typist employed by the City Council of Nairobi, chairperson of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake, a Daily Nation columnist, and the woman who nearly defeated the late President Mwai Kibaki in the 1969 Bahati parliamentary race.
In October 2026, Makena Brandon sat down with Mama Jael at Porini Nature Sanctuary in Nanyuki and came back with a biography written in her honour. Drawing on published interviews, newspaper reports and academic research — with the disagreements between sources stated openly — it follows her life chapter by chapter: education, early career, the 1969 and 1974 elections, the 1979 KANU elections, FORD and multi-party politics, the honours she has received, and one closing question: has she been celebrated enough?
